This is not meant to be criticism or threatening, and there are no hidden meanings here. I would gladly donate funds to allow Alexey to continue to work on the 1.4 port but I would like some assurance that the funds I sent in December 2001 for the 1.3 port is going to yield results soon. If the Sun approved 1.3 binary package for FreeBSD is something we can expect within the next month (as has been rumored on the freebsd-java list), then please let us know how much you estimate you need for the 1.4 port. The lack of a approved JDK for FreeBSD is threatening to drive us to a different platform and we need a "breakthrough" with at least 1.3 to remain and donate.
