Do:
>df <return>

And look at the percentage number in front of /var

If it's close to 100%, your system is about to die.

If so, go into /var look for large files. Log files can be big if ignored.
Do you have StarOffice installed? Some default installs will put that
sucker on /var and kill your machine.
