To verify that no debug symbols were added, I ran licq from within gdb:
(gdb) run
Starting program: /usr/local/bin/licq 
(no debugging symbols found)... debugging symbols found)...(no debugging
symbols found)... (repeated a few more times) ...
Program exited normally. 
(gdb)
