I do this now w/ make installworld -DNO_ROOT DESTDIR=<somedir>, then
you can tar it up w/ something like
cd <somedir>; tar -czf world.tar.gz @METALOG

And then transfer it to the machine and extract it... been working great,
though not necessarily the "standard" way of doing it...
