You have to use a separate program such as Esetroot, which comes with Eterm, to set the background, for example. It's highly configurable as well --if you want to take the time to learn a little lisp. Also, if you build it from the port, it will pretty much build gnome along with it unless you do 'make install -DNOGNOME'.
