I'm enjoying the flow of this question, but I think some answers are missing the mark on differences (and getting lost in 'betterness'). There are some basic overviews that I'd personally like to know (and I don't, hence the questions rather than answers). So, in a technical overview sort of way, can some folks discuss how different are they and in what respects? FOR EXAMPLE: I know the kernels are the key difference - how different are those? Are the APIs different because of 10 function calls having different formats or are there 100s of functions that are totally different? Are there entire sections that are missing from one and not the other? Without deep and dirty details, are there conceptual differences such as the multi-tasking system or networking system and so forth? What sub-systems are contained in the kernels; what sub-systems are external to the kernels and are those two questions different for each? Having then covered the kernels, how do all of the secondary base executables tend to compare? IE: are they all the same source, simply altered to properly match the kernel API? Or are they very different source with different histories? I would *guess* based on different configuration files and so on, that these secondary executables built around the kernels actually have had a fair amount of time of different history leading to their current position along side of two different kernels, but I'd like to hear for sure. How about it, can we hear from some of you knowledgable ones about their differences from more of a technical overview viewpoint? Thanks, Bruce. PS: Sounds like an excellent series of articles for someone to write - let us know if someone takes that up (or already has). ______________________________________________ FREE Personalized Email at Mail.com Sign up at http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
