It is set to en_US.UTF-8 by default in orde= r to satisfy the need of gnome-terminal. Personally I seldom see the problem because I always use a UTF-8 locale. I think the best solution is to change the default locale of new installation= to a UTF-8 locale, but it is probably not going to happen.
