You can turn it off without removing the code.

Personally, I'd prefer to remove the option (always build the code) and 
default to enabling it on new filesystems.  Kirk's recent commit removes 
the last major objection to this.

As for the "small systems" argument - a small system should use a smaller 
filesystem. 8)
