Your system is too old.  Try to get the "2.2.1 upgrade kit" from

ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/packages-2.2.2/221upgrade-97.07.09.tgz

if you want to use -current ports on a 2.2[.1] machine.
