Sorry, I didn't see the replies later on this thread until I had replied.
Not sure how Sendmail does it (I'm an Exim user), but a 'netstat -an'
should show you if something's listening on port 113 when you send email.

There's an option, 'confTO_IDENT' with a default value of 30 seconds, that
sets the timeout waiting for a response to an ident query. Ahh... you
might want to read Q3.12 in the comp.mail.sendmail FAQ at
www.sendmail.org/~ca/email/sendmailv8.html to see if it applies to your
situation.
