If you upgraded via CVS then you would have been taken to 4.2-STABLE. -STABLE is always more recent, it gets updated multiple times daily. -RELEASE is an original point release (i.e. the last - -RELEASE was 4.2) however 4.2-STABLE is the latest 4.x-STABLE branch, this is because 4.2 was the last -RELEASE.
