If it really is an 'unknown user' message returned, the mail /did/ get to the dns2, but that machine does not have a user or alias for 'brian.' In that case, it sounds like a problem with NIS or whatever you are using to define users across platforms, and not really a mail or DNS issue. If you really shut down dns1, it wouldn't happen to be the NIS master too? :) If you have more troubles with this, please post selected pieces of the mail headers.
