Why does the name server have to > get in between? That mapping from your domain --> your IP address needs to be stored *somewhere*. That's what the nameservers are for... Your machine can certainly be one of the nameservers for your domain, if that's what you want. Just run BIND (or djbdns, or your favourite DNS server) on it and give the IP to your registrar. However, you're supposed to have two nameservers for a domain, on separate networks (so that whatever breaks, at least one of them should be reachable). Probably your registrar or ISP will this, for a fee, or check out dyndns.org, who do primary and/or secondary name service for a one-off $30 donation.
