And when? The man page for printf(1) includes the text: HISTORY The printf command appeared in 4.3BSD-Reno. It is modeled after the standard library function, printf(3). A quick look in /usr/share/misc/bsd-family-tree indicates that 4.3BSD-Reno appeared in 1990. It has been there for a while. :-) ( And it has long been a minor source of irritation for me since on at least some Unix-systems when I write 'man printf' I get the man-page for printf(1) instead of the manpage for printf(3) which is usually what I want.)
