My 2cents are: pkg_version -v | grep -v "up-to-date". It shows
whatever I need to know for my port-submissions:

glitter-gnome-1.0.b.1_1 > succeeds port (port has 1.0.b.1)
linux-setiathome-i686-3.03 ? orphaned: astro/linux-setiathome-i686
linux_mesa-3.4.2 < needs updating (port has 3.4.2_1)
