I found out what the problem was.  You need to make sure that the linux
proc file system is mounted

mount -t linprocfs none /usr/compat/linux/proc

You could also put it in your fstab

none	/usr/compat/linux/proc	linprocfs	rw	0 0

That would probably be a good thing to put in the freebsd-java faq.
