It was a hardware problem; changing the AT bus speed in the BIOS from CPUCLK/2 to CPUCLK/4 fixed it. I became suspicious after a 3c509 wouldn't work either (turned out it was reading junk out of the ID register) My apologies for the noise generated. Please delete or close this report. Thanks, Brian.
