Did you run the config script (config.sh) in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xmcd/config? Run it - if you have an atapi drive then the correct device is /dev/rwcd0c (you must specify the raw device). I've been using this literally for years and it's always worked, both with SCSI and atapi drives.
