An extension to this though, I have had problems with the VIA 686B south bridge chip (I've also got the lovely AMD DDR north bridge) with versions of FreeBSD prior to 4.3-Release. 4.3-Release and I assume all -stable since then is fine. Just in case you are trying to install from an older release.
