Did you set # Sound Support device pcm If you built and installed a kernel configed with pcm, you only need to have done a cd /etc ./MAKEDEV snd0 You said "mixer" works. If you have done the above, then you should be able to type cdcontrol -f /dev/acd0c cdcontrol> play and listen to an audio CD.
