also, just because it terminates in RJ45 (and are you sure it's rj45, or
does the male connector just look like it) does not mean that it is
ethernet.  Our cisco 7200 series routers have cards in them with what
looks like rj45 ports (female).  They are actually rj48 (different
pin-outs i think) and are integrated csu/dsu's that'll take that
connector off a channelized t1.  Its actually a serial interface.

I would say in all likelihood, the answer to your question is "no".  You
need something that'll take the serial signal off the t1 and convert it
to ethernet at layer2.  Unless of course you have a csu/dsu in your fBSD
box.
