I doubt that a reinstall was necessary.

Possibly your filesystem, but that can be corrected with fsck.

I believe I told you exactly what to do.  But perhaps your system is 
different.  Perhaps someone else can help.  That's the beauty of keeping 
all messages cc'd to the questions mailing list.

Unix is a step learning curve.  Be patient.  And there are several step by 
step guides.  I gave you the URL to my page at

to other pages.  And try the handbook at www.freebsd.org
