I grow slightly wiser. From my ~/.history file: 1075 19:09 more /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/Cards Does running the binary XFree86 check ones /etc/X11/XF86Config file's specifications against the above Cards file?? 1085 19:12 XFree86 -probeonly ; more /var/log/XFree86.0.log Is this "-probeonly" flag really useful? I didn't see anything about driver or chipset confirmed in the logfile. :( 1088 19:14 more /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/r128_drv.o Oops, that's a binary file. Are driver files usually Object files?? 1091 19:14 more /usr/X11R6/bin/startx We are not even CLOSE yet to tweaking a ~/.xinitrc - skip ahead please! 1098 19:16 chmod 700 /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 The chmods used to be -rws--x--x but I didn't like that "s." So anyway does it make sense for me, logged in as root, to chmod the XFree86 binary to -rwx------? 1119 19:19 XFree86 -xf86config ~/XF86Config The screen goes black, and after a few seconds that "standby crackly" noise is heard. When I C-A-BS to kill the server, the bulk of the errors are: Symbol drmFreeBufs from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/r128_drv.o is unresolved! Symbol drmR128TextureBlit from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/r128_drv.o is unresolved! Symbol drmFreeBufs from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/r128_drv.o is unresolved! Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/, removing from list! Does this offer anything clueful in my ever-woeful ongoing problem with XF86? -- Peter Leftwich President & Founder Video2Video Services Box 13692, La Jolla, CA, 92039 USA +1-413-403-9555 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
