You need to load either nautilus or gmc.  The icons come from a desktop
file manager.  Nautilus is now the default, and it works quite well.
However, you can still opt for the old gmc FM as well:

/usr/ports/x11-fm/gnomemc

Also, please use freebsd-gnome for these kind of questions.  This list is
more discussion on issue running the -stable branch of FreeBSD.
