By default ppp is trying to link with the DES crypt stuff 

I forget what I did to fix it..
I think it required recompiling  ppp in the source tree without the
DES options.. (so that the .o files didn't require DES)
(it was some -non-USA option)

yes that is why I made those makefiles etc.

hopefully the picoBSD crew will make 'boot' and 'fixit'
versions of picoBSD and then the old stuff can go away.
