The error happens on my system right after it changes to the root device,
and starts going through the normal contortions it goes through on startup.

Yes it is a DMA/33 chipset, not a DMA/66 capable.  To my knowledge, any
DMA/66 drive should be capable of DMA/33.  I do see your point, it may be a
chipset related issue, or a compatability issue where FreeBSD isn't properly
working with that chipset.

I've never experienced data loss ether.  It's just the fact that I have 2
fairly modern drives, that are relegated to PIO mode for data transfers.

Just as another note, I have the drives "dangerously dedicated".
