After dump writes to the tape I get

dump: Closing /dev/rwst0
wst0: 29624320d total bytes transferred
atapi1.1: controller not ready, status=c0 <busy,ready>, error=c0
atapi1.1: controller not ready for command
   (4 lines)
wst0: Sense media type failed

At this point the system hangs and I must reboot. I installed the system
from the Walnut Creek CD, Version 3.1
