Did they also say that they could supply new ones?

And they did this willingly, though they thought it might destroy
their hardware?

The main thing that's wrong is that you believe them.

I've been running FreeBSD on AMD K6 CPUs for about 18 months.  I'm
using a K6/333 now, and I've used the "egg fryer" K6/233 before that.

There's a lot of superstition here.  I don't know how to help you, but
it would be good if you could post what the system is now doing, and
what makes you (and the dealer) think that the CPUs are dead.  Go into
as much detail as you can.
