I tried the watchpoint patch mjg@ sent; as noted in my response to him, I did not see the problem recur when I booted the resulting kernel. And given your observation, as well as that I've updated 4 other stable/9 systems (sources at r241801 for 3 of them; at r241786 for the other), none of which exhibited the problem, I suspect that something is remarkably sensitive to the storage layout.
