With two HDs it used to crash and/or lock the system: I tried different HD vendors, different MBs, different FreeBSD versions and architectures, but nothing would help. This was however until I tried 9.0 release. I don't know if the reason is the "new CAM-based ATA stack", but it's been working flawlessly with four HDs for weeks now. HTH.
