As Greg had mentioned in his message I tried recompiling the kernel (plenty of time on my hands :-))
with a managing IRQ of 9 and tried again. Still crashes on insertion of the card with the same symptoms
:-( I'm considering trying a different card just to see if that's the problem (although the card still
works fine in the IBM laptop I mentioned).
