You can check the manpages for "afterstep" and "wharf" for more details. Briefly, I would say that you got to search this file for something called "pager and vitrual desktop" or smthing like that... There you'll have a setting like "2x2" (for 4 areas) and you can set it the way you want this way, by saving the file and restarting afterstep or "recycling" it. Reply any questions!
