Per Warren's e-mail, I checked to see if there was a J46 (which a different section of the hard drives specs identifies as the "cylinder limitation jumper"), and remove it. Sure enough, that fixed the problem: ad1: 29311MB <Maxtor 53073H4> [59554/16/63] at ata0-slave using UDMA66 Yes, that's more like it. :-) Perhaps this should find its way into the FAQ (under troubleshooting, if nothing else)?
