libc_r will not be present in upcoming FreeBSD 7.X series.

You should always link in threading library with flags which are
provided to you as a make variable ${PTHREAD_LIBS}. Interestingly, it
isn't documented anywhere, you're right. I'll write a chapter for
Porter's Handbook soon, thank you for pointing out this ommision.
