This is done at the moment by using

     # Propagate the chosen python version to submakes.
     .MAKEFLAGS:     PYTHON_VERSION=python${_PYTHON_VERSION}

within bsd.python.mk, which opens a different can of worms (see
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=ports/167368 for details)
