 mplayer seems to work fine here:

 % gothmog:/usr/ports/multimedia/mplayer# make patch
 % N - O - T - E
 % [...]
 % ===>  Extracting for mplayer-0.99.7_2
 % => Checksum OK for MPlayer-1.0pre7.tar.bz2.
 % load: 0.15  cmd: bzip2 75509 [runnable] 2.80u 0.31s 11% 4348k
 % load: 0.15  cmd: bzip2 75509 [runnable] 3.67u 0.38s 16% 4348k
 % load: 0.15  cmd: bzip2 75509 [runnable] 4.47u 0.40s 17% 4348k
 % ===>  Patching for mplayer-0.99.7_2
 % ===>  Applying FreeBSD patches for mplayer-0.99.7_2
 % gothmog:/usr/ports/multimedia/mplayer#

 Error code 1 is defined as EPERM in `/usr/include/sys/errno.h'. Can you
 try completely removing the 'work/' subdirectory of mplayer's port and
 start again?
