Sorry, this is most certainly a pilot error. I assume the directory in
question (you did not name it...) was on a UFS file system. There is
no known way for directories to mysteriously disappear other than
hardware defects messing up file system data structures. If this is the
case you may have a chance of getting data back by running fsck and
see if something was reconnected to the lost+found directory on that
file system.

By the way, where are your backups?
