This is not as great a security breach as you might expect. One needs physical access to the machine and enough time to do it. If I have physical access to a machine and 5 minutes, it is mine. Try: Boot to single user. Enter -s at the boot prompt. Accept the default shell. mount -a passwd root <enter the new password> exit passwd is in /usr/bin.
