The ini file for MC contains: .mc/ini:use_8th_bit_as_meta=0 .mc/ini:display_codepage=Other_8_bit But I didn't find a menu / setting corresponding to the first setting which I had to change from 1 to 0 manually in order to use Umlauts in the MC editor. Therefore, I have set the LC_* variables to en_US.ISO8859-1 or de_DE.ISO8859-1 respectively.
