If you need a desktop environment you can try PC-BSD (http://www.pcbsd.org/), it's easy and fast to set-up. I believe it will run good at your hardware. I had it on my old 1,6Ghz asus laptop and it was ok. And if you need a console interface - just get latest release of FreeBSD (http://www.freebsd.org/where.html).
