Following the advice that the include files I would need to change should be under src/sys I found the appropriate definition to change in src/sys/sys/syslimits.h I changed #define CHILD_MAX 40 /* max simultaneous processes */ to #define CHILD_MAX 100 /* max simultaneous processes */ and that fixed all my problems. I thought I should post the solution in case anyone else out there was waiting to see if there was an answer. I also changed the same definition in /usr/include/sys/syslimits.h so other programs know the increase in the limit.
