Yup, that's in there.

I've blown them wide open.

Yes.

Yes, after a very long time, several minutes, but the machine still
is very sluggish and I can't rip or anything.

I did use ktrace and it was doing an ioctl on the device that was 
"inappropriate."

I can rip discs using gcombust and I can talk to the device with cdrecord.

Thanks for the hints, we'll see if I (or anyone else on the list) 
can turn up anything else.
