I would recommend swapping out your current Mitsumi CD-Rom with another 
*working* CD-Rom. It could be your Mitsumi CD-Rom; some have been known to 
mysteriously die (e.g. 24x). I had a 24x CD-Rom just die, and so did a
co-worker (but I have 2 different Mitsumi 8x CD-Roms in two different FBSD 
boxes right now, and they work fine...go figure).
