I have used tar to save/restore/move a lot of user home directory and
never seen anything similar.

I have little to no experience wit MacOS, are the filenames case
insensitive on Mac?

Have you tried installing gnutar on Mac?

Also, you cound try with a small archive that would only contain one
directory and one file, both with the same name (except the capital).
