You can't just use a PS/2 -> USB adapter on *any* mouse; you need a "dual protocol" mouse. It sound like your mouse may be old enough that it only supports a PS/2 -> RS-232 (9 pin serial) adapter. Your board may have a header to allow the easy installation of a serial port, but I have not checked (and serial mice may not be auto-magically configured).

Last time I was looking for a mouse, I could not find a PS/2 version. I was reluctant to get a USB mouse because none of them are USB Certified (http://www.usb.org). Many of them also had a "Side-scrolling" scroll wheel (designed with Vista in mind?) very awkward to use as a middle button.

If you mouse IS a "USB" mouse, try a different one.
