On a gut-feel, I rebooted and now I have all the colors with the vesa driver. I wonder if I have a very poor quality graphics card or if all the patching/compiling etc. caused the graphics card to go into some sort of a weird state! So now I have the X server working with the vesa driver. I can live with that. Thanks for all your assistance. regards, joseph
