to change the date, you may need to use a full timestamp. read the
date(1) man page for more info.

date, if given with a bad flag pops out with: 

[jan@hi chap1] {647} date -h
date: illegal option -- h
usage: date [-nu] [-d dst] [-r seconds] [-t west] [-v[+|-]val[ymwdHMS]]
            [-f fmt date | [[[[[cc]yy]mm]dd]HH]MM[.ss]] [+format]
