How will > "upgrading" to 4.5-RELEASE help me if it's the same thing? No, you won't need to upgrade to 4.5-RELEASE. You probably have read that you need to upgrade to 4.5-STABLE or `4.5-RELEASE plus security fixes'. The version of the source that you get with 4.5-RELEASE is the same version that is `tagged' in the official FreeBSD repository of source with RELENG_4_5_0_RELEASE. This is a "point along the RELENG_4 branch". In the first case, you need to update to the RELENG_4 version of the sources. This will give you the latest source of the 4.x branch. In the latter case, you will upgrade to the RELENG_4_5 version of the source (note the extra _5 at the end of the source version). This is a version of the source that changes less often than the RELENG_4 code and includes only security fixes for 4.5-RELEASE. All this is hopefully explained in more detail in the Handbook. Look at the "Cutting Edge" chapter.
