Following the advice of this list, I installed 3.1-STABLE-1990503 in place
of 3.1-RELEASE. When I installed 3.1R, I didn't try to install the src and
xf86333 distrbutions. This time I tried, but it didn't work.

I am using a 133 Pentium w/64M RAM. It has a piece of crap SVGA monitor.

I downloaded all new files from
releng3.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/spapshots/i386 and made new floppies. I
then booted from the floppies and went to install from my primary DOS
partition.

The installer told me "Unable to transfer the scontrib distribution from
wd0s1" Trying again didn't work. It then told me the same thing for
sggnu, setc, slib, sgames, sinclude, sliexec, etc.

For what purpose will I want these src files??

The installer then gave me the same message for a long list of all the
xf86333 files, xfonts, xf100, xcyr, xfscl, and so on. Well, you get the
point.

I then received the message "Couldn't extract the following distribution.
This may be because they were not available on the installation media
you've chosen:" A list did NOT follow.

When I tried to configure the XFree86 I got this, "The XFree86 setup
utility you choose does not appear to be installed. Please install this
before attempting to configure XFree86." I wasn't surprised.

I checked the list of distribution files it couldn't transfer or extract
against the contents of C:\FREEBSD\xf86333 and C:\FREEBSD\src and they are
all there. In \xf86333 most of the files have the suffix .tgz, some of the
files are in a sub-directory, \xf86333\SERVERS. The only files I had
removed from the download were the PC98 directory and its contents because
I presumed that a Compaq Deskpro 4000 is not a Japanese PC98 machine.

What went wrong?? How do I install these files after the fact??

Btw, what is the easiest way to install lynx so I can read the Handbook and
FAQ in /doc?? The files have .html suffixes.

THANX!!

PEACE OUT :)
MARK
