The first one includes the following pointer to a package of CVSup that is statically linked and does not depend on X11 to run: http://people.freebsd.org/~jdp/s1g/freebsd-3.5/cvsup-16.1e-FreeBSD-3.5S-ix86-elf-nogui.tgz Grab this package and install it. That should fix your problems.
